Introduction For many young people in the Netherlands, weekends are a time to relax, meet friends, or catch up on schoolwork. But for a growing number of Hindu youth, there is one place they choose to be every weekend Shakha . Shakha is not just an activity. It is a space where we learn, grow, and discover who we are. As young members of HSS Nederland , here is why Shakha has become an essential part of our lives. 1. A Place Where Values Become a Way of Life In school we learn subjects. At home we learn routine. But in Shakha, we learn values dharma , unity , respect , discipline , and self-confidence . Every game, every geet, every baudhik teaches us something meaningful. We don’t just talk about values we practise them through teamwork, responsibility, leadership, and Sewa. Many of us feel that Shakha strengthens our character and makes us better human beings. 2. A Community That Feels Like Family Growing up in the Netherlands, it is easy to feel disconnected from culture or tradition. Shakha gives us a family-like community where we feel understood and supported. Here, nobody is a stranger. Older swayamsevaks encourage us, younger look up to us, and everyone grows together. The feeling of “ Pariwar ” is real and that is what keeps us coming back. 3. Staying Connected to Our Hindu Identity For many youth, identity becomes confusing in a multicultural environment. Shakha gives clarity. It helps us connect with the roots of Hindu philosophy in a practical, friendly, and modern way. We learn: Why festivals matter How dharma guides our decisions How yoga, surya namaskar, and shlokas strengthen our mind How Hindu values are relevant in today’s world This connection brings confidence and pride not as something separate from Dutch society, but as something we contribute to this society with. 4. Leadership, Discipline & Personal Growth Shakha is one of the few places where youth are trusted with responsibility . We lead games, plan sessions, conduct geet, organize Sewa activities, and speak during baudhiks. That gives us: Public speaking skills Teamwork experience Discipline and time management Courage to take initiative Confidence to lead from the front These are life skills that help us in school, university, and later in our careers. 5. Fun, Friendship & Positivity The games, the laughter, the challenges, the MahaKhel or Yog sessions, and the warm atmosphere make every weekend special. Many of us say that after a stressful week at school, Shakha gives us a break, a breath of positivity, and renewed energy. 6. Learning the Spirit of Sewa Sewa is not just an activity, it becomes a mindset. Through food drives, charity events, environmental actions, volunteering, and helping the community, we learn: to serve without expecting anything in return, to care for society, and to take responsibility as young citizens. This is one of the most powerful lessons Shakha gives us. 7. Because Shakha Shapes Us for Life When you ask youth why they come every weekend, the answer is simple: “Shakha makes me a better version of myself.” It gives us: Sanskar (character) Sangathan (unity) Sewa (service) Shaurya (courage) Confidence in our identity A community we belong to Shakha helps us walk the path of becoming strong, kind, responsible, and grounded individuals — ready to contribute to our families, our community, and Dutch society. Conclusions For the youth of HSS Nederland, Shakha is more than a weekly gathering. It is a journey a journey of discovering who we are, what we stand for, and what we can give to the world. Every weekend, we return not out of obligation, but out of joy, purpose, and inspiration. Because in Shakha, we don’t just play or learn " we grow ".
